IN THE BLUR

The cold stroke against her cheek jumpstarted her brain.

Sent a spark flowing beneath her skin.

“Where are you, Chrysa?”

“Peggy, is that you?”

“Where did you go?”

“Peggy, where are you?”

“Why did you leave us… leave me?”

Chrysa wanted to tell her sister that she didn’t leave, but how could she when she couldn’t see past the blackness surrounding her at every angle?

“I’ll figure this out, I promise.”

“You need to find me,” she whispered and the words left a buzzing imprint along her lips.

Chrysa put all the focus she could summon into opening her eyes.

It took every ounce of willpower she possessed, but thinking about her sister’s voice and the touch to her face made her feel stronger. She fought against whatever was trying to pull her under, because she refused to go back to stillness.

She wouldn’t allow the veiled to keep her stuck in a nightmarish world of her own making, while motionless in another.

“Lovey, are you there?”

Her eyelids had cracked enough that light filtered between her lashes.

“Ira…” She tried to turn, but found her head was pinned in place.

That was when she remembered the dark pit and the squirming roots.

Chrysa inhaled a sharp breath and even though it stung all the way down her throat and esophagus, it was enough to inflate her lungs.

Her eyes snapped open.

She was back in the middle of the eerie forest.

The trees stretched impossibly high, joined to become a canopy. The branches shimmered and warped before settling back into place. Everything about her body felt wrong. She wasn’t touching the ground. She was in mid-air, inside a cage made of thick, black roots rising from the pit.

She flexed her fingers and toes. Was glad she could at least do that. Everything worked differently in this forest. Sound was filtered and sight hid behind a gauze able to leech all color.

“Lovey…”

“Be quiet, will ya?”

“Lovey?” Chrysa struggled, but managed to pivot her neck enough to catch a glimpse of her classmate. She was also encased inside a cage made of wood, but there was something not quite normal about her feet. “What happened to you?”

“We’re trapped.” Her voice seemed stilted, and it wasn’t because of their surroundings.

“They’ve put us in cages and we’re now suspended in the middle of nowhere,” Ira added from her right. “I really wish Dad had warned me about this place.”

“No one knows about… this place,” Lovey whispered.

“Seriously, what’s wrong with you?” Chrysa asked, concerned.

“She tried to cut her way out of the cage and it stabbed her through both ankles,” Ira said.

Chrysa’s shoulder ached as she struggled to catch a glimpse, and when she did a gasp escaped her. Ira was right. Both of Lovey’s ankles were impaled by the ends of sharp branches and her broken skin was weeping. “That looks painful.”

“Feels as bad as it… looks.”

“But you’re a goddess, right? Can’t you break free?”

“Oh, Chrysa.” Lovey chuckled and the echo sounded freaky as hell. “I’m a lot of things, but everyone is… on the same playing field… in this place.”

“And that’s what makes everything even stranger,” Ira said.
